# How tech-support phone scams work, and what to do

A surprise call saying your computer, account, or security software has a problem is a reason to stop, not to follow the caller’s instructions. End the call and find support through a company contact you already trust.

**Never give an unexpected caller remote access.** A real problem can be checked from your device or through the company’s official support route after you hang up.

## How do tech-support phone scams work?

Scammers may pretend to represent a known technology company, describe a virus or charge, or direct someone to install software that lets them control a device. The FTC explains that unsolicited callers may seek financial information, remote access, or payment after showing a fake problem. See the FTC’s [tech-support scam guide](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-spot-avoid-and-report-tech-support-scams).

## What should I do during an unexpected support call?

- Do not click a link, install an app, read a one-time code, or share a password, bank detail, or security code.
- Do not call a phone number displayed in a pop-up, text, renewal notice, search advertisement, or the unexpected call itself.
- End the contact. If you are concerned, open the company’s official app or use the support number from a bill, product documentation, or verified website.
- Ask a trusted person for a second look before paying or granting access.

## What if I already gave remote access?

Disconnect the device from the internet if practical, update security software, run a scan, and change passwords beginning with the email account that can reset other accounts. Contact the financial institution if payment or account information was shared. The FTC’s [what-to-do guidance](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/what-do-if-you-were-scammed) explains how to contact the service used to pay and report fraud.

## Can call labels solve this?

No. A label can be useful context, but it cannot promise perfect protection and an unlabeled call is not automatically safe. For a cautious setup that still preserves wanted calls, see the [call-screening options guide](/call-screening-options). For account and device follow-up, use the [Privacy Guide for U.S. households](/privacy-guide).
